North Korea picked up important wins on their travels, beating Jordan 1-0 and the UAE 2-1 in World Cup qualifiers.
Egypt won their Africa Cup of Nations group in Ghana ahead of Cameroon whom they defeated 4-2 and then 1-0 in the final to lift the cup having thumped Ivory Coast 4-1 in the semi.
Bahrain picked up 1-0 wins away to Oman and at home to Japan in World Cup qualifiers.
Chile enjoyed away wins 2-0 in Bolivia and 3-2 in Venezuela before thumping Colombia 4-0 at home in World Cup qualifiers.
Bosnia and Herzegovina hammered their Estonian visitors 7-0 in a World Cup qualifier.
Slovenia drew 1-1 away to Poland and defeated Northern Ireland 2-0 at home in World Cup qualifiers.
Jamaica had home wins over Mexico and Honduras 1-0 and Canada 3-0 in World Cup qualifiers and won the Caribbean Cup on home soil with a 2-0 win over Grenada.
El Salvador enjoyed good home wins in World Cup qualifiers, 3-1 against Panama and 5-0 over Haiti.
Antigua & Barbuda began the Caribbean Cup qualifiers by brushing aside Bermuda 4-0 in the Cayman Islands and got the better of Guyana 2-1 in Trinidad & Tobago to qualify for the finals where they earned draws 1-1 against Haiti and 2-2 against Guadeloupe in Jamaica.
Haiti had a poor year, playing a goalless draw at home to Netherland Antilles where they also drew 2-2 against Suriname and lost 3-1 to Costa Rica in World Cup qualifiers. They were also thumped 5-0 away to El Salvador in the same competition.
Senegal were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations after losing 3-1 to Angola in the group stage and failed to reach the World Cup finishing 3rd in their group behind Gambia with whom they drew 1-1 on home soil.
Ghana disappointingly lost in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations they were hosting 1-0 to Cameroon and also lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 away to Gabon.
Iraq failed to get past the third round of the Asian qualifiers for the World Cup after losing 2-0 away to Qatar and 1-0 in the return match played in the United Arab Emirates.
Ivory Coast were thumped 4-1 by Egypt in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations and then 4-2 by hosts Ghana in the bronze match. They were also held 0-0 away to Madagascar in a World Cup qualifier.
The biggest surprise of the year was Lithuania's 3-0 romping of Romania in a World Cup qualifier away from home. Bermuda's 2-1 victory away to Trinidad & Tobago in another World Cup qualifier was also a big result.
The highest score of the year was El Salvador's 12-0 thumping of Anguilla in a World Cup qualifier.
There were no new entries, but the point unit was changed by multiplying all points by 100 to get rid of decimal points and put more space between teams.
