There were no changes at the top, but Chile finished in 6th place having successfully negotiated their way to the 2010 World Cup finishing only behind Brazil in South America.
Slovenia rose in the rankings after winning 3-0 at home to Poland and 2-0 away to Slovakia and qualifying for the World Cup through the play-offs at the expense of Russia.
Algeria beat Egypt 3-1 at home and Zambia 2-0 on their travels before getting the better of Egypt 1-0 in a tiebreaking play-off in Sudan to reach the World Cup.
New Zealand took part in the Confederations Cup in South Africa where they earned a point in a goalless draw with Iraq. They also achieved a goalless draw away to Bahrain whom they defeated 1-0 in the return match to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Zanzibar began the CECAFA Cup in Kenya with the 4-0 battering of Burundi and went on to finish third.
Morocco had a disastrous attempt to qualify for the World Cup, finishing bottom of their group after losing 2-1 at home and 3-1 away to Gabon and being held 0-0 at home to Togo before losing their final home match 2-0 to Cameroon.
Iran failed to qualify for the World Cup having lost 2-1 at home to Saudi Arabia. Their 1-0 loss away to Jordan in an Asian Cup qualifier was also a disappointing result.
Poland finished only ahead of San Marino in their World Cup qualifying group losing 3-2 in Northern Ireland with whom they could only draw 1-1 in the return fixture. The Poles also lost 3-0 in Slovenia and were beaten 1-0 at home to Slovakia.
Guatemala lost 1-0 to Panama in the UNCAF Nations Cup in Honduras to finish bottom of their group and ended up in 6th place after losing their play-off match 2-0 to Nicaragua.
Czech Republic missed out on the World Cup having lost 2-1 to neighbours Slovakia and drawn 0-0 with Northern Ireland in home matches. They also lost 2-0 to Azerbaijan in a friendly in the UAE.
Georgia lost 2-1 at home to Moldova and 2-0 away to Malta in friendly matches and were thumped 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Bulgaria.
Guinea finished bottom of their World Cup qualifying group after losing to Burkina Faso 4-2 away from home and 2-1 in the return match that was played in Ghana due to security concerns. They also fell 2-1 away to Malawi.
The most surprising result was Nicaragua's 2-0 victory over Guatemala in the UNCAF Nations Cup. Another big result was Mexico's 5-0 mauling of their American hosts in the Gold Cup final.
The highest score of the year was Hong Kong's 12-0 thrashing of Guam in the East Asian Championship in Taiwan.
The only country to join the rankings was the Northern Mariana Islands who moved into the 216th place.
