Canada defeated some of the top teams in friendly matches, beating Denmark 3-2 in Nigeria, winning 2-0 away to Australia, overcoming China on penalties in Newcastle, thrashing Guatemala 12-0 in Louisville and drawing 1-1 away to the USA before picking up a 3-1 win against their illustrious hosts.
Jamaica played in the first Caribbean Cup where they cruised 4-1 past Bermuda.
South Africa hosted and reached the final of the African Cup beating Ghana 1-0 in the semi final.
Portugal defeated Switzerland 2-0 away and Italy 1-0 at home in European qualifiers.
Haiti qualified for the final group of the Caribbean Cup after a 1-0 home win over Jamaica and won the tournament with a 3-1 victory over hosts St Lucia.

Spain lost 2-1 at home to France, before being thrashed 7-0 in Sweden and taken apart 6-1 at home to Denmark.
South Korea were stunned 2-0 away to Hong Kong and thumped 4-1 by Mexico in America in friendly matches.
Turkey were swept aside 6-0 in Hungary and lost 3-2 at home to Greece in Euro qualifiers.
Ukraine lost home matches 6-1 to Germany and 2-1 to England in European qualifiers.
The biggest surprise of the year was Portugal's 2-0 win in Switzerland in a Euro qualifier.
Three more countries joined the rankings. St Lucia moved in at 57, Zimbabwe at 87 and Reunion Island took up the 90th place on arrival.
