Big Movers of 2006

China ended the year in 4th place having come from 2 goals down to defeat hosts Australia on penalties to win the Asian Cup, but Germany and the USA continue to lead the way.

Jamaica rose the most after easing past St Lucia 5-0, smashing Antigua & Barbuda 10-0 and slaughtering St Kitts & Nevis 11-0 in Caribbean Cup/World Cup qualifiers at home before putting 3 past Haiti without reply in the next round played in Trinidad & Tobago.

Paraguay defeated Bolivia 5-1 and Peru 2-1 in the Copa America where they finished 4th after earning a goalless draw with hosts Argentina.

Uruguay overcame Chile 2-1 and Ecuador 1-0 before claiming 3rd spot in the Copa America with a 3-2 victory over Paraguay in the final group stage.

Mali brushed Morocco aside 2-0 away and 4-1 at home in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and enjoyed a 3-2 win against DR Congo in the final tournament.

Wales were 3-0 winners in Moldova and defeated Israel 3-1 in the Netherlands before hammering their Estonian hosts 7-0 in World Cup qualifiers.

Venezuela drew 1-1 with Bolivia and enjoyed a 2-0 win over Peru in the Copa America played in Argentina.

Slovakia had a long winning streak that included a 3-2 victory away to Romania in a World Cup qualifier.

Panama had 2-0 and 3-0 wins at home to Costa Rica and Guatemala respectively in World Cup qualifiers.

Latvia lost all their friendly and competitive matches including 4-1 to European qualifier hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina and 1-0 to Armenia on the same ground to finish bottom of the group.

Angola failed to go beyond the first round of the African qualifiers after a narrow 3-2 home win was overturned 3-1 in Equatorial Guinea.

Costa Rica returned from Panama having lost both their World Cup qualifiers, 2-1 to Guatemala and 2-0 to their hosts.

Syria, Guinea, Kiribati and Eritrea moved down the rankings due to new teams entering the rankings above them.

The most surprising result was Armenia's 1-0 win over Latvia in Bosnia and Herzegovina while Brazil's 2-0 defeat to hosts Argentina in the Copa America final was also worth mentioning.

The highest score was Japan's 13-0 demolition of Jordan in the Qatar Asian Games.

The 12 new teams moving into the rankings from position 96 to 132 were St Vincent & Grenadines, Antigua & Barbuda, US Virgin Islands, Togo, Benin, Kenya, Tunisia, Georgia, Ivory Coast, Macedonia, British Virgin Islands and Turks & Caicos Islands.
